Stiftung Pro Afrika

Private foundation

About the funder

Founded in 2008 and officially recognized as a non-profit organization, the Ellen and Karl-Heinz Hornhues Stiftung Pro Afrika primarily supports educational initiatives in Africa, mainly in Namibia. From the proceeds of the foundation's capital and donated funds, approximately 98,000 euros had been allocated to projects and individuals by the end of 2017. Supported initiatives include farm and bush schools, kindergartens at various locations (Otjikondo, Shamalindi, Kwakwas, Khorixas-Donkerhoek, Aris, Cambridge/Aranos), scholarships for nine students at the University of Namibia, as well as tuition fee coverage for secondary schools. In cooperation with the German-Namibian Society and the German Federal Environmental Foundation, the foundation implemented a solar project for a bush school near Grootfontein and has been financing a mini-hostel at the Kwakwas Primary School since 2014. In Germany, the foundation is active through lectures at schools and associations, biennially through an Africa Prize at the Osnabrück Africa Festival, and since 2017 with a sponsorship award for early-career researchers at the University of Osnabrück who dedicate their theses to the African continent.

Mission & Vision

The Ellen and Karl-Heinz Hornhues Foundation Pro Africa is committed to sustainably improving access to and quality of education in Africa and to strengthening intercultural exchange between Germany and Africa through targeted support of projects and students. It ensures that donations and capital gains directly and fully benefit the recipients on site.

Target groups

The funding programs are directed firstly at disadvantaged pupils, students, and educational institutions in Namibia (e.g., farm and bush schools, kindergartens, primary schools), secondly at individuals (scholarship recipients), and thirdly at local partner organizations that ensure the appropriate use of funds. In Germany, the foundation targets schools, clubs, associations, and early-career researchers engaged with Africa to raise awareness of the continent and existing collaborations.
