About the funder

The Steine-Erden-Bergbau und Umwelt Foundation is a non-profit foundation established in 1995, originally founded by SBU – Sächsische Baustoff Union Dresden AG (now Holcim Deutschland GmbH). It supports scientific research and honors outstanding achievements in the field of economically and environmentally sustainable supply of mineral raw materials, the renaturation of mining-affected landscapes, and sustainable environmental protection. The foundation awards grants biennially to individuals and groups. It is supported by Holcim Deutschland, the Mineral Building Materials Entrepreneurs' Association (UVMB) e. V., and the TU Bergakademie Freiberg.

Mission & Vision

The Steine-Erden-Mining and Environment Foundation is committed to promoting dialogue between science, industry, and the environment in order to develop innovative, practical solutions for sustainable raw material extraction and landscape management. Through its award, it honors scientific work and practical initiatives that contribute to environmentally compatible and economically viable raw material supply, thereby securing the habitats of future generations.

Target groups

The funding awards are aimed at young scientists, researchers, and students, as well as companies, institutions, authorities, private individuals, and non-profit associations that contribute to environmentally compatible and economically viable raw material supply, material and energy efficiency, protection of natural resources and raw material conservation, renaturation of mining-affected areas with a focus on biodiversity, as well as regional planning and landscape management. Eligible submissions include monographs, theses (bachelor’s, master’s, doctoral dissertations, habilitations), and innovative practical projects, either individual or collective works.
