Private foundation

About the funder

The Stiftung Stipendium Gerlacianum is one of the smallest and oldest family foundations in Germany. It was founded in 1600 by Sibrand Gerlach from Grimersum in East Frisia. In his will, the founder stipulated that the proceeds from his agricultural real estate be used to support students who are descendants on both their paternal and maternal sides. The foundation's capital mainly consists of land in East Frisia. Since the 17th century, the foundation has been managed by a curatorium and deputies. With the statutes of 1997, the foundation was recognized as charitable for tax purposes.
