Stiftung Westfalen-Initiative für Eigenverantwortung und Gemeinwohl
About the funder
The Westphalia Initiative Foundation for Self-Responsibility and the Common Good is a general, independent foundation under civil law based in Münster. It was established in 1999 on the basis of the testamentary bequest of Martin Leicht. The purpose of the foundation is to promote science and research, education and upbringing, as well as the concept of homeland in the Westphalia region. Central to its mission is the principle of subsidiarity, which strengthens self-responsibility and community spirit at the municipal and regional levels. The foundation operates actively, develops and manages its own projects, and supports selected partners with financial grants.

Mission & Vision
The Westphalia Initiative Foundation promotes the principle of subsidiarity as a democratic and social fundamental: tasks should be addressed at the lowest level at which they can be managed. In doing so, it strengthens personal autonomy, community spirit, and the regional identity of Westphalia. Through research, education, and practical projects, the foundation inspires people to act responsibly and contributes to the sustainable development of their home region.
Target groups
The funding programs are aimed at citizens in Westphalia who can be won over to the principle of subsidiarity. This includes volunteers and full-time staff engaged in municipal and village structures, educators and researchers, professional audiences from science, politics, and business, as well as all interested parties who wish to actively help shape the common good locally.
