Ursula und Werner Schanné-Stiftung

The Ursula and Werner Schanné Foundation is a non-profit private foundation established in 2023 by Ursula Schanné in memory of Björn Mertz. It supports science and research on rare brain tumors in both children and adults. The primary funding focus is the research laboratory of the Department of Neurosurgery at the Medical Faculty of Saarland University, where innovative methods for diagnosis and therapy are developed.

Our mission is to achieve progress in the treatment and cure of rare brain tumors through targeted financial support and close collaboration with leading research institutions. We aim to improve the quality of life for those affected and to support the medical community in developing new diagnostic and therapeutic approaches.

Scientific projects and research groups of the Neurosurgical Clinic at the University Hospital of Saarland focusing on rare brain tumors such as gliomas, meningiomas, and other cerebral neoplasms are supported. The foundation targets both established scientists and early-career researchers who advance individualized therapeutic approaches and genetic analyses.
