About the funder

The Willy Scharnow Foundation for Tourism was established in 1953 by the Bremen travel merchant Wilhelm Friedrich Karl (Willy) Scharnow and operates as an independent, non-profit foundation in Frankfurt am Main. It supports the education and training of tourism professionals through regional study trips with seminar character, the financial assistance of language courses at home and abroad, as well as the awarding of scholarships for internships abroad. Furthermore, it annually honors outstanding top graduates of tourism-related vocational training programs. With an endowment of approximately €8.3 million and a voluntary board of trustees representing the entire German travel industry, it is one of the most prestigious sponsors in the tourism sector.

Mission & Vision

The mission of the Willy Scharnow Foundation for Tourism is to raise awareness of the close interconnection between peoples and countries through regional educational programs, encounters, and support initiatives. It aims to promote international understanding, tolerance, and responsible, sustainable tourism by professionally and personally qualifying tourism professionals.

Target groups

The funding opportunities are primarily aimed at tourism professionals and travel agents in Germany (with additional eligibility for participants from Austria and Luxembourg), especially permanently employed staff of travel agencies and tour operators, trainees in tourism, as well as owners and managing directors of tourism companies. Furthermore, the foundation supports tourism students and interns abroad through scholarships, as well as participants in language courses.
