About the funder

The ZEIT STIFTUNG BUCERIUS is a non-profit foundation under civil law, founded in 1971 by Ebelin and Gerd Bucerius, and headquartered in Hamburg. It is committed to the statutory areas of science and research, education and upbringing, as well as art and culture, and additionally focuses on press freedom and politics & society. Besides initiating its own projects such as the Bucerius Law School and the Bucerius Kunst Forum, it annually supports over 400 projects and scholarship programs in Germany, Central and Eastern Europe, as well as internationally. Through its long-term commitment, it defends freedoms, creates spaces for freedom, and strengthens democratic participation and culture of debate.

Mission & Vision

The ZEIT STIFTUNG BUCERIUS promotes an open, active civil society by defending freedoms, creating spaces for engagement, and providing guidance in societal debates. It initiates and supports innovative projects in science, education, art, journalism, and politics to strengthen democratic values, anchor academic freedom and educational equity, and sustainably promote cultural heritage and independent journalism.

Target groups

The funding programs are aimed at non-profit organizations, research and educational institutions, cultural workers, artists, journalists, as well as civil society organizations and initiatives. Special target groups include early-career researchers, students and doctoral candidates, pupils in the WEICHENSTELLUNG mentoring system, visual and performing artists, cultural institutions in Hamburg and Northern Germany, as well as projects that strengthen democracy, press freedom, and culture of remembrance.
