Description

The Joachim Herz Foundation in Hamburg supports up to 80 outstanding scientists from engineering, economics, and life sciences with the Add-on Fellowships for Interdisciplinary Science and Transfer, who pursue interdisciplinary research approaches within the thematic complex "Resources of the Future." The aim is to strengthen the transfer potential of innovative projects already in early career stages and to promote sustainable exchange between different disciplines. Participants, including doctoral candidates, postdocs, and fixed-term junior professors without tenure, must be employed at a German university or non-profit research institution at the time of application and demonstrate an interdisciplinary approach to resource management, material development, or economic issues within their work. The next application round runs from January 12 to March 15, 2026.

Funding is provided for individual material costs of up to €15,000 over 27 months, as well as an additional €3,000 for measures promoting equal opportunities. Funds can be used flexibly – from travel expenses and conference fees to the acquisition of hardware and software, as well as financing student assistants, own scientific events, and communication activities. Living expenses and medical treatment costs are not eligible for funding. Selection is based on criteria such as scientific excellence, interdisciplinarity, transfer potential, and realistic budget planning. Required application documents include a project description, financial plan, CV with publication list, performance records, and a statement from supervisors. The program also offers a diverse range of training and networking opportunities, including kick-off meetings, workshops on transfer and entrepreneurship topics, as well as regional chapter meetings.
