Description
Advanced and Innovative Hardware Components for Virtual Worlds (RIA) is an EU-funded initiative for the research and development of cutting-edge XR hardware, wearables, and haptic components for realistic immersion in virtual worlds. Within the framework of the co-programmed partnership “Virtual Worlds,” wearable sensors, haptic actuators, and interface technologies are designed, developed, and validated—always with a focus on energy efficiency, interoperability, and inclusive accessibility. Consortia consisting of technology companies, research institutions, and public users collaborate on novel hardware systems that expand the range of sensory perception (sight, hearing, touch, smell) and are suitable for industrial as well as societal applications. The funding covers personnel and material costs, travel, and subcontractor services at 100% and supports projects with a funding amount between €4.8 million and €5.6 million over 36 months.
Eligible to participate are companies, educational and research institutions, non-profit as well as public organizations from EU member states and associated countries. At least three independent partners from different countries must form a consortium led by a coordinator based in the EU. The application form requires a detailed project description, a financing plan, as well as ethics and security reports. After publication on 17 November 2026, the deadline runs until 18 March 2027 at 17:00 (Brussels time). Applicants with excellent concepts will be evaluated in a single-stage procedure based on innovation content, methodology, structure, and impact and will be funded at 100%. This program aims to secure the European lead in virtual worlds technologies and strengthen social participation.
