Applied Research in the Agricultural Sector

The Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg supports application-oriented research projects within the framework of the grant program "Applied Research in the Agricultural Sector," which promote the sustainable development and strengthening of the local agricultural economy. The program targets a broad spectrum of eligible institutions such as companies, educational institutions, universities, and associations. It focuses on research projects in the areas of research & innovation, agriculture & rural development, as well as digitalization. Central topics such as innovative production, climate change, biodiversity, plant protection, resource efficiency, and non-GMO breeding are taken into account to develop practical results and concrete recommendations for action that consider the diverse aspects of Hamburg's agricultural economy, including forestry, hunting, and fisheries.

The funding program emphasizes supporting projects that, through their innovative approaches, ensure the sustainable competitiveness of the regional agricultural economy. Participating research projects must possess the required expertise and demonstrate a clear connection to the interests of all companies operating in the relevant sector. Selection criteria are based on professional expertise, project relevance, degree of innovation, and sustainability aspects. By awarding a grant of up to 100 percent of eligible expenses, which include personnel costs, equipment, and operating costs among others, the Hamburg administration creates an incentive for interdisciplinary cooperation. This links scientific practice with operational reality, enabling the development of sustainable and forward-looking concepts in the agricultural sector.

Applicants are required to submit an application prior to the start of the project, including a detailed financing plan, a concept description, and proof of expertise. Eligible expenses also cover contract research and consulting services, allowing for flexible use of funds, while non-research-related payments are explicitly excluded. This funding measure thus supports not only the strengthening of the agricultural economy at a regional location but also the long-term safeguarding and further development of the agricultural, forestry, hunting, and fisheries sectors. The program therefore offers an attractive platform to develop innovative solutions that meet the challenges of a changing environment and economic conditions.
