Description

Compensation payment for areas with environmental restrictions in North Rhine-Westphalia supports agricultural enterprises that manage permanent grassland areas in designated Natura 2000 and coherence areas. With an annual subsidy of €95 per hectare in Natura 2000 areas or €135 per hectare in coherence areas, additional expenses and economic burdens are compensated. Under certain official conditions, premiums can increase by up to €235 per hectare if, in addition to refraining from plant protection products or additional drainage, special ecological provisions such as mowing bans or restricted cultivation periods are observed. Interested farms submit their applications electronically via ELAN-NRW by May 15 each year and provide the land register as well as forms Annex B1 and the cover sheet for the collective application.

The funding is subject to clear conditions: at least one hectare of eligible land must be located within the specified protected areas, usage codes 93, 459, 480, or 492 must be demonstrated, and farm operations must comply with the basic requirements for farm management as well as the GLÖZ standards. Additionally, breeding birds must be protected, embankments or excavations must be avoided, and no further drainage measures are permitted. Exclusions apply to land in public ownership or owned by the NRW Foundation for Nature Conservation, Homeland and Cultural Care, as well as other public foundations. With this compensation payment, the Ministry of Agriculture and Consumer Protection of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia promotes sustainable grassland management and simultaneously strengthens the preservation of ecologically valuable habitats.
