Description

The Bavarian Funding Guideline for Wood (BayFHolz) supports climate-friendly construction projects in Bavaria that rely on renewable and CO₂-storing raw materials. The program promotes new construction, expansion, and vertical extensions of municipal and multi-storey residential buildings using timber construction. Eligible recipients include municipal authorities, natural and legal persons under public and private law, as well as non-profit organizations and private builders. The focus is on the long-term binding of carbon in timber components and insulation materials, with the funding amount calculated at €500 per ton of bound carbon and a maximum of €200,000 granted per measure. A prerequisite for approval is the submission of the application before the start of construction to the locally responsible district government, compliance with structural timber construction requirements, and proof of the storable CO₂ amount via the official CO₂ tool.

Funding is provided for new buildings with a minimum gross floor area of 300 m² and vertical extensions or expansions starting from 100 m². Multi-storey residential buildings must have three residential units with at least 35 m² of living space each; vertical extensions require at least two additional units. Only main buildings constructed in timber are eligible; basements, carports, and ancillary buildings are excluded. Used building materials must be market-ready, low-emission (classes E1 or F0), and sustainably produced. A binding usage period of twelve years from receipt of the proof of use ensures long-term utilization. Through this initiative, the Free State of Bavaria makes a key contribution to energy efficiency and climate protection in the construction sector and promotes ecological urban development.
