Description
The funding program "Barrier-Free Renovation of Owner-Occupied Housing" in Hesse supports private owners in redesigning their owner-occupied living spaces to be barrier-free and disability-friendly. With a non-repayable grant of up to 50% of eligible expenses – but no more than €15,000 – measures according to DIN 18040 Part 2 as well as installations such as ramps, elevators, or the removal of steps and thresholds are subsidized. Eligible applicants are individuals who, as owners, wish to renovate their owner-occupied apartment or house, provided that work has not yet commenced and the living space is actually self-used. The funding amount applies from a minimum investment volume of €1,500 and can be used for structural modifications inside the dwelling as well as for improvements in the residential environment, such as adapted parking spaces.
The aim of the initiative is to enable people with disabilities to live independently and autonomously in their own homes. The focus includes, among other things, the conversion of bathrooms and kitchens, the installation of assistive systems, and the creation of barrier-free access to outbuildings. Not eligible for funding are, among other things, the acquisition or enlargement of buildings. Applications can be submitted year-round; this requires a completed application form, proof of specific need, and confirmation from the responsible housing promotion authority. After a positive review, approval is granted by the Economic and Infrastructure Bank of Hesse. This funding component sustainably contributes to improving living quality and consistently removing barriers.
