Contributions to the Construction and Reconstruction of Cycling and Hiking Trails

Contributions to the New Construction and Renovation of Cycling and Hiking Trails in Upper Austria are aimed at other public law entities and private legal entities included in the state’s supraregional cycling and hiking trail concept. Investment contributions are funded for new construction, renovation, and improvement measures on cycling and hiking trails to sustainably expand the trail network and adapt it to both tourist and traffic-related requirements. Structured as grants, the program supports infrastructure and urban development projects that contribute to strengthening environmentally friendly mobility. Funding is continuously available and awarded based on the Upper Austrian Road Act 1991 as well as the General Funding Guidelines of the state. A budget of approximately EUR 1.47 million is allocated to realize high-quality and safe cycling routes for leisure and everyday traffic.

A prerequisite for a successful application is an informal request including a project description, which must be submitted before the start of construction. Inclusion in the statewide cycling and hiking trail concept is mandatory; otherwise, there is no deadline for application submission. In the course of approval, the state of Upper Austria reserves the right to review the execution and scope of construction measures for their eligibility for funding and ecological compliance. The Directorate of Road Construction and Traffic of the Office of the Upper Austrian State Government coordinates the procedure and ensures that investment contributions are used efficiently. This program offers sponsors of cycling and hiking trails a reliable source of funding for sustainable infrastructure development.
