Description

Within the framework of the Berlin Program for Sustainable Development (BENE 2), funding priority 6 places special emphasis on promoting sustainable, multimodal urban mobility. The program supports public institutions, non-profit organizations, and companies in Berlin in implementing innovative measures aimed at the use of renewable energy sources and the shift of motorized individual traffic in favor of environmentally friendly options such as public transport, cycling, and walking. Eligible investments and material expenses can be supported by grants with a funding rate of 40% to 90%, provided that the specified conditions and proofs, such as secured overall financing and evidence that the project would not be feasible or only feasible to an unreasonable extent without funding, are met.

Among others, concepts and strategies aimed at reducing CO2 emissions, as well as measures to improve traffic connectivity and infrastructure in Berlin, are funded. This includes projects that implement structural optimizations of transfer points, the expansion of cycling infrastructure, and pedestrian-friendly redesigns. Innovative vehicle technologies with alternative drive systems, for example within the framework of the electromobility pilot project, are also considered. Applications are submitted online via the BENE 2 funding portal, with comprehensive documents such as a project outline, a financing plan, and a detailed project description to be provided. Key evaluation criteria, in addition to the degree of innovation, are particularly the sustainability aspects and the concrete contribution to reducing greenhouse gases.

The funding program is primarily aimed at main and district administrations, public law corporations, as well as charitable, non-profit, and church institutions active in Berlin. The support aims to optimize existing mobility concepts and adapt them sustainably to the challenges of climate protection. The use of the "first come, first served" principle, where the order of application receipt is decisive, also ensures a transparent allocation process. With this funding instrument, the Senate Department for the Environment, Mobility, Consumer Protection, and Climate Protection makes a significant contribution to the development of a smart, ecologically oriented urban infrastructure that meets the urban challenges of the 21st century.
