Description

The Berlin Program for Sustainable Development (BENE 2) supports innovative measures, projects, and initiatives in the capital that advance the transition to a sustainable, climate-neutral city. Backed by the State of Berlin and funds from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), this funding is aimed at public institutions, companies, and non-profit organizations based in Berlin. Through the use of grants, forward-looking concepts in areas such as digitalization, energy efficiency, renewable energies, smart cities, urban development, as well as environmental and nature conservation are to be realized. The program emphasizes the goal of embedding climate neutrality interdisciplinarily across politics, economy, and society, thereby setting new impulses for sustainable urban development.

The thematic focus areas of the funding program cover a broad spectrum that addresses the current challenges of the climate crisis and urban transformation. Eligible projects include, for example, climate-appropriate energy-efficient renovations, the establishment of decentralized and flexible energy and heating systems based on renewable energies, or measures for climate and disaster preparedness. Likewise, the preservation of nature, protection of biodiversity, and strengthening of green infrastructure in the urban environment are supported. Projects aimed at reducing environmental pollution, such as noise and air pollution, as well as concepts for sustainable urban mobility that reduce motorized individual traffic in favor of environmentally friendly transport modes (public transport, cycling, and walking) are also considered.

The implementation of projects requires, in addition to execution within the State of Berlin, proof that the project would not be feasible or only feasible to an insufficient extent without the funding. Furthermore, the total project costs must be secured, and the requirements of sound financial management must be met. A project outline is required for the application process, which paves the way for possible funding – participants can rely on advice and support from B.&S.U. Consulting and Service Company for Environmental Affairs mbH. With this practice-oriented funding approach, experts and stakeholders are encouraged to develop and implement new, forward-looking ideas that significantly contribute to the climatic and urban transformation of Berlin.
