Description
The Berthold Leibinger Innovation Prize honors outstanding innovations in laser technology every two years – whether a novel light source or a promising application. Organized by the Berthold Leibinger Foundation GmbH, applications are open worldwide to both science and industry: individuals as well as interdisciplinary project groups from research institutions and companies may participate through self-application or nomination. The prize features a three-stage jury selection process, initially selecting eight finalists. These finalists will present their work in person before the internationally composed jury in February 2027 in Ditzingen. The award ceremony will take place on June 18, 2027, and will be presented together with the Future Prize. Applications must be submitted exclusively in English and must demonstrate a clear connection to laser technology. The submission deadline is September 1, 2026.
A complete application includes a brief summary (5–10 lines), a detailed written documentation (5–10 pages), a short biography of the participants, and a one-page explanation of the context of the innovation. Evaluation criteria include scientific advancement, technical creativity, and practical benefit compared to the state of the art. The three awardees will receive prize money of €50,000, €30,000, and €20,000 respectively. The Berthold Leibinger Foundation reimburses travel expenses for the jury presentation and participation in the award ceremony. This funding opportunity is aimed at pioneers who open new application fields with their laser innovations and decisively advance technological progress.
