Description

The BIKO program of the North-South Bridges Foundation supports non-profit associations based in Berlin or one of the five East German federal states in the development and implementation of educational measures on colonialism, responsibility, and postcolonial continuities at general education schools in Berlin. Small projects up to EUR 6,000 can be applied for at any time, larger projects up to a maximum of EUR 15,000 at specified deadlines. With a funding rate of up to 90% and a duration of up to 12 months, expenses for material resources, personnel and fees, travel and subsistence costs, as well as administration (up to 10%) are supported. The transfer of project implementation to commercial enterprises is not funded; in the small projects sector, the creation of educational materials remains excluded. Key evaluation criteria include didactic quality, postcolonial perspectives, gender mainstreaming, and adherence to the Beutelsbach Consensus.

The aim is to raise awareness among students, teachers, and other school actors of Berlin’s and Germany’s historical responsibility in colonialism and to anchor active engagement in the classroom. For this purpose, external experts from postcolonial initiatives and Black organizations are to be involved to bring diverse experiences and perspectives into the classroom. Applications are submitted using specific forms along with association documents and are accepted continuously for small projects, and at deadlines such as 25.10.2025 or 16.02.2026 for larger projects. Registration in the transparency database of the State of Berlin as well as compliance with Berlin’s development policy guidelines are mandatory. Project start is possible no earlier than 01.02.2026.
