Description

Within the framework of the Horizon Europe Innovation Action for the bioremediation of conflict-damaged ecosystems in Ukraine, an international consortium of at least three independent institutions (EU Member States or associated countries) is funded. The goal is the development, testing, and demonstration of novel biotechnological and nature-based methods – such as phytoremediation – for the decontamination of soil, water, and air in affected regions. With a funding rate of up to 70% and a funding amount of €11 million, companies, research and educational institutions, municipalities, as well as start-ups can jointly create innovative prototypes, conduct test runs, and involve local stakeholders such as farmers, municipal administrations, and political decision-makers. The project duration is 36 months, with the application deadline running from April 17 to September 17, 2026.

To ensure the sustainable restoration of Ukrainian ecosystems, the funding activities address, in addition to technical measures, aspects of climate change resilience, FAIR-compliant data processing, and the transparent inclusion of vulnerable population groups. Submission requires the formation of a multi-actor approach, registration of all participants in the EU Participant Register, preparation of Proposal Part A and B, a detailed budget table, an ethics self-assessment, and an open science plan. Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are explicitly supported to realize practical solutions with a high degree of innovation and to assist Ukraine on its path to reconstruction and EU integration.
