Description
The Federal Funding for Efficient Heat Networks (BEW) supports the nationwide new construction and expansion of district heating and local heating networks that utilize a high proportion of renewable energies, as well as the decarbonization and efficiency improvement of existing supply structures. The program of the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi) aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and advance climate protection through innovative network concepts. Funding is provided as a non-repayable grant and can be applied for continuously at the Federal Office for Economic Affairs and Export Control (BAFA). BEW places a special focus on the integration of biomass, solar thermal energy, waste heat, or geothermal energy, thereby promoting technology-neutral solutions that contribute to sector coupling in the long term.
Eligible for funding are companies, municipal and public institutions, as well as energy suppliers who intend to build or decarbonize a new or existing heat network as operators or developers. A prerequisite is that the heat network has a specified minimum share of renewable energies or effectively reduces CO₂ emissions through efficiency measures. Applications can be submitted online at any time, with approval based on the submitted project documents and technical evidence. BEW is particularly suitable for network operators who want to modernize their infrastructure in an environmentally friendly manner, as well as for municipalities aiming to sustainably design regional heat networks. A comprehensive proof of use ensures transparency and appropriate use of funds and contributes to the successful implementation of energy-efficient heat network projects.
