Description
The Federal Mathematics Competition is aimed at all young academic talents in Germany who are pursuing an educational path leading to a general university entrance qualification. In three consecutive rounds, participants independently work on challenging mathematical problems from the fields of algebra, geometry, number theory, and combinatorics. The first and second rounds each consist of four homework assignments, which are solved over several months through self-study and submitted by mail. Timely registration via the online platform is required for this; a registration and participation coupon as well as a declaration of independence must be submitted. Group work with up to three participants is only permitted in the first round. The jury evaluates the submissions based on the quality and comprehensibility of the solutions as well as the level of difficulty and awards certificates, cash prizes up to €200, and recognition certificates. Participants who receive a first prize after the second round qualify for the final colloquium, in which national winners are determined through subject-specific discussions and scholarships from the German National Academic Foundation are awarded.
With a project duration of approximately 14 months, the competition promotes mathematical talent through individual achievement rather than competitive pressure. Certificates and material prizes are presented regionally, while national winners participate in a nationwide award ceremony. The competition is organized by Bildung & Begabung gGmbH in cooperation with the Donors' Association for the Promotion of Sciences and Humanities in Germany and the Federal Ministry of Education. Registrations are continuously possible; the submission deadline for the first round is March 2, 2026 (postmark date), and the project start is from December 1, 2025. Eligible for funding are all students of any grade level at schools in Germany, including German-recognized foreign schools in Germany.
