Description

Careleaver Worldwide enables young people between the ages of 15 and 30 who have grown up in residential youth care to undertake diverse stays abroad. The nationwide initiative of the Kreuzberger Kinderstiftung gAG supports and promotes care leavers in school years, voluntary services (IJFD, weltwärts, ESK), internships, work camps, and self-organized trips within Europe as well as worldwide in school programs. In addition to organizational support – from visas and travel registration to storage of household goods – the program offers three seminar weekends (orientation, preparation, and return), an emergency fund for unexpected expenses, and personal mentoring. The selection committee, composed of former scholarship recipients, takes into account care leaver status, educational format, and individual motivation. Applications and funding requests are accepted continuously, with German citizenship or permanent residency, school completion or full-time compulsory schooling, and health suitability as prerequisites.

Funded by private donations and sponsoring foundations, scholarship recipients receive an average of 2,000 euros for flights and domestic travel, visa costs, seminar participation, emergencies, storage costs, as well as a start-up allowance of up to 800 euros upon return. The funding is complemented by a mentor network of experienced alumni who provide individual advice and support. Careleaver Worldwide thus creates a reliable familial anchor and enables young adults to take a self-determined step abroad to develop intercultural competencies, strengthen their personality, and realize equal educational opportunities.
