Description
Closing knowledge gaps on Earth system science supports innovative research projects within the framework of Horizon Europe that address key knowledge gaps about the Earth system, thereby strengthening global and regional climate assessments. The call is aimed at consortia of at least three independent partners from different EU Member States or associated countries with proven expertise in climate research and Earth system science. Eligible costs include personnel, material, and travel expenses, while real estate acquisition and retrospective costs are excluded. Each project can receive between EUR 5 and 9 million for a duration of up to 36 months, with a funding rate of 100%. Submission is two-stage: an initial outline phase until 15 April 2026, followed by the full proposal deadline on 8 October 2026 (submission opens 18 December 2025). Evaluation criteria include “Excellence,” “Impact,” and “Quality and efficiency of the implementation.”
The funding objective is to provide decision-makers worldwide with scientifically sound foundations for effective climate mitigation and adaptation measures. Close cooperation with initiatives such as ESA’s FutureEO and the EC-ESA Earth System Science Initiative is also planned to facilitate access to satellite data. Participating institutions range from universities and research centers to companies and start-ups developing advanced methods and novel models to reduce uncertainties in climate simulations. Applications must include a project description, implementation plan, budget breakdown, CVs of key personnel, as well as ethics and security documentation. Inclusive gender and open science practices enhance scientific excellence and promote broad dissemination of results to advance the transition to a climate-neutral and resilient society.
