Performing Arts: Funding for Associations, Comparable Institutions, and Individuals

The nationwide grant program for performing arts in Vienna supports ensembles, independent groups, and solo artists from the fields of culture & media and enables partial funding of annual programs and individual projects in theater, dance, performance, and experimental formats. Eligible for funding are interest groups, associations, non-profit organizations, as well as private individuals with a permanent (residential) address in Austria. Thanks to ongoing submission opportunities, project holders can plan flexibly. The application must be submitted to the responsible federal ministry at least three months before the start of the project. An independent evaluation by experienced experts ensures the best possible selection of innovative productions and strengthens Vienna’s position as a vibrant cultural location.

With an annual budget of around 17.7 million euros, the Arts and Culture Section provides sufficient funds for diverse projects. To apply, the general application form as well as the form for scholarships, acquisitions, and studios must be submitted. A prerequisite for funding is that the project cannot be realized or cannot be fully realized without federal funds. Depending on economic capacity, a financial or in-kind contribution must be demonstrated, and other funding already applied for or granted must be disclosed. There is no individual legal entitlement to funding. The funding objective is to support contemporary artistic creation and the sustainable anchoring of performing arts in society.
