Strengthening Democracy

The community fund "Strengthening Democracy" is aimed at non-profit organizations, initiatives, and social enterprises based in or primarily working in Hamburg. It supports projects in three thematically graduated phases to strengthen democratic cohesion in particularly affected neighborhoods in the eastern and southwestern parts of Hamburg (Phase 1), target group-specific initiatives against anti-democratic propaganda (Phase 2), as well as measures to promote media literacy and digital visibility of pro-democratic actors (Phase 3). A total of up to 5,000 euros per project is available, which can be used, for example, for personnel costs, fees, material and rental costs, project materials, public relations, catering, or travel expenses. Political party events or political positioning in favor of individual parties are not considered. Projects are evaluated based on thematic relevance, geographic location, and a clear impact orientation. Successful approaches can be deepened beyond the three funding phases to create sustainable impulses in the Hanseatic city.

The responsibility lies with the BürgerStiftung Hamburg, which coordinates the standardized online procedure and makes consolidated decisions following the respective deadlines. Interested applicants submit their application using the PDF-supported form and attach a current exemption certificate. Application deadlines are set for Phase 1 until 31.12.2025, Phase 2 until 31.03.2026, and Phase 3 until 30.06.2026. Applications are possible three times a year; multiple applications are welcomed provided they contribute to a broad distribution of funds.
