German Book Prize

The German Book Prize annually honors the outstanding German-language novel of the year and provides a platform for authors and publishers from across Germany within the framework of the Frankfurt Book Fair. The sponsor of this prestigious award is the Foundation for Book Culture and Reading Promotion of the German Publishers and Booksellers Association, which, through this accolade, enhances the visibility of literary works and highlights the importance of the book as a cultural leading medium. Focusing on literary quality, innovation, and relevance to German-language literature, the prize promotes reading culture and stimulates a broad societal discourse. In 2025, the call for submissions begins on February 4, followed by the announcement of the nominees on August 19 and the shortlist on September 16, before the award ceremony takes place on October 13.

Eligible to participate are individuals and companies submitting a German-language novel published during the call period through a publisher. The jury of literary experts evaluates the submissions according to strict criteria and selects a shortlist that honors both innovative narrative forms and socially relevant content.
