Description

Since 1984, the German Language Prize, awarded by the Henning-Kaufmann Foundation for the Preservation of the Purity of the German Language, honors outstanding achievements in promoting a clear, comprehensible German language as well as its scientific study. This prestigious award recognizes scholars, writers, journalists, and other personalities who have advanced the care and development of the German language through published works or public contributions. The prize is not a literary award in the strict sense but also acknowledges literary texts and language criticism as well as contributions to science communication.

Eligible for funding are individuals from the fields of culture, science, education, media, research, and training or further education who have distinguished themselves in research, teaching, journalism, or artistic practice related to the German language. Self-nominations are not possible: proposals are accepted by the foundation board at any time in justified form. Key evaluation criteria include the degree of innovation, public impact, and contribution to the comprehensibility and study of the German language. The submission deadline is ongoing, allowing recommenders from all over Germany to submit qualified proposals at any time and thus contribute to honoring outstanding linguistic achievements.
