Description
Individual Project Funding by the FWF enables scientists from all disciplines at Austrian research institutions to realize clearly defined, time-limited basic research projects. Funding is provided as a 100% grant covering personnel costs, material expenses, travel costs, equipment costs, material and general project expenses, and covers project durations of up to 48 months. Public and private research institutions in Lower Austria, Upper Austria, Salzburg, Styria, Tyrol, Vorarlberg, and Vienna are eligible to apply; applications can be submitted at any time via the elane portal. Prerequisites include a clear description of objectives and methodology, appropriate scientific qualifications, sufficient infrastructure, and work capacity. Evaluation is based on the degree of innovation, research quality, approach, qualifications, and ethical-gender-related aspects.
The funding process consists of submitting the project description with attachments (bibliography, financial aspects, CVs, sustainability statement) as well as supplementary documents (publication list, evidence of career interruptions, etc.). Special attention is given to ecological sustainability in the research process: this includes CO₂-optimized business travel, efficient laboratory organization, resource-conserving data collection and use, up to sustainable equipment procurement and maintenance. Research partners from developing countries can be financed under the category “other costs,” and international collaborations outside Russia are possible. Each individual project must deliver conclusive results and make partial results publishable. Subsequently, the advisory board decides on funding eligibility based on an international peer-review process, whereby applications with formal deficiencies can be continuously resubmitted. The goal is the sustainable strengthening of excellent basic research in Austria.
