Description
The EU-funded innovation initiative “Energy efficiency and sustainability of AI data processing in Data Centres (IA)” aims at the development and demonstration of novel technologies for energy-efficient and climate-friendly AI data processing in data centres. Public institutions and companies from all EU Member States as well as associated countries are invited to submit pilot and demonstration projects. Particular focus areas include innovative cooling methods such as direct chip cooling, advanced thermal interface materials, and multi-scale thermal management; novel backup power systems with minimal cooling requirements; as well as overarching concepts for optimized workload management, integration of renewable energies, and waste heat utilization. Collaboration of at least three bidders in the PCP phase is required to create EU-wide transferable reference models demonstrating the potential for improved Power Usage Effectiveness and low-CO₂ heat supply. The funding rate is 100%, with a total funding amount of €39 million.
Interested lead procurement entities (such as municipalities or governmental bodies), companies, and research institutions with expertise in data centre technologies and AI infrastructure must submit a project description, a market consultation report, a financing plan, and tender documents by 5:00 p.m. (Brussels time) on 18 March 2027. Applications will be evaluated based on the criteria of innovativeness, energy efficiency benefits, economic growth potential, and EU-wide replicability. The initiative supports the EU climate goals, strengthens strategic technological autonomy, and promotes open pilot demonstrations across Europe. It is part of the Horizon Europe framework programme in the areas of digitalisation, energy efficiency, and climate protection.
