Description
The compensation payment for the slaughter of persistently BVD-infected cattle in Vienna supports livestock owners in mitigating financial losses caused by an officially mandated slaughter of affected herds. Since November 29, 2012, there has been a continuous possibility to apply for a grant that compensates for the reduced meat value of infected animals. Through funding in the area of Agriculture & Rural Development, both animal health and food safety are to be strengthened, and the stability of agricultural enterprises in the urban region preserved. The subsidy is approved by the Governor and paid directly to the eligible livestock owners.
Funding is provided to private individuals and companies that slaughter persistently BVD-infected cattle within 14 days of infection confirmation. A prerequisite for receiving the payment is compliance with the provisions of the BVD regulation as well as the timely slaughter or culling of the infected animals. Compensation rates range between €75 and €277.60 per animal, depending on the age and status of the cattle; an additional surcharge is granted for breeding cattle. Since applications can be submitted at any time, Vienna livestock owners can access financial support flexibly and promptly. The aim of the measure is to protect livestock owners from existential losses while simultaneously securing animal and goods traffic in the region.
