Ernst Waldschmidt Prize

The Ernst Waldschmidt Prize, awarded every five years, honors outstanding scientific achievements in the field of Indology with a special focus on Buddhism, Indian and Central Asian archaeology, and art. With an endowment of €5,000, the Ernst Waldschmidt Foundation specifically supports dedicated researchers and early-career scholars in Germany. Nominations are eligible from senior representatives of Indology, while self-nominations are also possible. The jury makes its decision based on the recommendation of the Board of Trustees of the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation, thereby recognizing both interdisciplinary excellence and innovative research perspectives.

Applications must include a scientific curriculum vitae, a complete list of publications, and selected publications. The next award will be presented in 2025; application deadlines and formalities will be announced by the Foundation in due course. The program is particularly aimed at PhD-qualified Indologists and emerging professionals who bring new impulses to their research and deepen the understanding of Asian cultures. The award not only acknowledges academic achievements already attained but also strengthens future career paths.
