Description

The Lebensraum Foundation – Mensch.Boden.Wasser.Luft. enables free erosion prevention courses in the field in Rhineland-Palatinate, specifically targeting farmers and vintners in the Soonwald-Nahe sponge region. This ongoing, grant-supported education and advisory program combines regional site visits with dialogue-oriented training sessions to identify erosion-prone areas and develop tailored protective measures. The objective is the sustainable preservation of fertile topsoil as a central production basis as well as the improvement of heavy rain preparedness. Participants gain valuable insights into soil quality, humus formation, water retention, and landscape water management, and can refine their ideas for erosion reduction together with experts.

Within the courses, specialist advisors introduce flash flood hazard maps on-site, explain porosity and infiltration capacity, and present concepts such as understock greening, agroforestry systems, or keyline design. Through individually tailored training offers at the community center or on their own farms, practical content is conveyed – from extended crop rotations and the use of legumes to technical water retention measures. Initial implementation steps can be supported by project partners and funding instruments of the Rhineland-Palatinate cultural landscape promotion. Thus, the program opens sustainable prospects for regional soil protection, promotes networking and expertise, and contributes in the long term to climate change adaptation and the strengthening of rural development.
