Description
The travel cost subsidy for students provides automatic support for recipients of study grants throughout Austria to partially cover travel expenses incurred during their studies. Without a separate application, the funding is granted as part of the study grant and paid out in ten monthly installments. The aim of the measure is to reduce the financial burden caused by daily commutes to the place of study as well as extraordinary trips to the parental home, thereby promoting equal opportunities in academic life. Clear guidelines according to the Study Support Act 1992 ensure that the funding amounts are distributed transparently and evenly.
Eligible are all students enrolled at an Austrian university, university of applied sciences, or private university who receive a study grant. Three components are funded: The mobility allowance covers general travel costs at the place of study, the commuter allowance additionally grants €1 per kilometer of distance up to a maximum total amount of €700 per academic year, and the home travel allowance covers up to €260 annually for trips between the place of study and the parental home. Since no application is required, the award is made automatically as part of the system application (winter semester: 20.09.–15.12.; summer semester: 20.02.–15.05.). The subsidy is subject to the same repayment conditions as the study grant and significantly contributes to the financial relief of students who have to cover long commuting distances.
