Description
The Cologne Gymnasial and Foundation Fund awards approximately 200 family scholarships annually from the proceeds of around 90 private family foundations. The aim of the award is to support descendants of the original founders during their secondary and university education. A prerequisite for application is verified inclusion in the family tree as well as an official family register, for which certified birth and marriage certificates are required. Further documentation, such as current school certificates or enrollment confirmations, must be submitted via the online portal within a two-month period following the calls for applications (each on June 1 and December 1). In addition to formal criteria, the focus is primarily on academic and scholastic achievements as well as – if stipulated in the respective foundation statutes – a means test.
After reviewing all documents, the Board of Trustees of the Cologne Gymnasial and Foundation Fund decides on the award based on the intentions of the founders as enshrined in the foundation charters. The scholarship is paid in a lump sum for one year and may be extended through subsequent applications if the funding period allows. The calls for applications are announced not only in regional media but also on the Fund’s website. This targeted support helps to preserve the assets and traditions of the family foundations and to sustainably promote young talents in North Rhine-Westphalia.
