Description

The Hermann Reemtsma Foundation supports non-profit and charitable organizations, municipal and church bodies in Hamburg and Northern Germany in the preservation of listed buildings as well as the care and selective acquisition of artworks for museums. Project-related grants cover, for example, architectural fees, restoration, expert reports and assessments, as well as repair measures on historic monuments and maintenance of collections in museum depots. A key factor is the demonstration of initiative and a significant own contribution, which is considered an essential prerequisite for a successful funding decision. Funding is particularly granted for objects with high architectural or cultural value, such as village churches, artists’ residences, or post-war modernist buildings, as well as selected acquisition projects for public collections. The funding amounts vary depending on the project scope from several thousand up to one million euros.

Project inquiries can be submitted informally in writing by post or as a PDF by email; deadlines are March 1 and September 1 for the respective board meetings in May and November. Required documents include, among others, a cover letter with project title and requested amount, a brief project description, a detailed cost and financing plan, cost estimates from architects, statements from monument conservators, offers from restorers, a schedule and action plan, as well as meaningful visual material and the current tax exemption certificate. Selection criteria include alignment with funding priorities, quality of expert reports, cultural value and monument aspect, as well as the applicants’ commitment demonstrated through verifiable own contributions.
