Description

The funding program “Promotion of Biodiversity through Flowering Areas and Biodiversity Trails” is aimed at municipal authorities in Baden-Württemberg who voluntarily commit to implementing measures to strengthen biological diversity on their own, non-leased land. With grants ranging from €345 to €1,025 per 0.5 ha, the state supports the establishment of perennial flowering areas, strips, and species-rich grasslands, as well as the planning and creation of biodiversity trails. The latter extend over two to eight kilometers and feature at least four stations with information boards or interactive elements. The measures must be professionally planned, pedagogically prepared, and maintained for ten years to sustainably promote habitat connectivity, cultural landscape preservation, and environmental education. A prerequisite for funding is, among other things, the use of regionally native and certified seed as well as extensive management without pesticide use.

The funding application requires a detailed concept, an overview map, a financing plan, and for trails, a professional overall concept with a timeline. The results are evaluated on-site by spot checks after a final inspection. Key evaluation criteria include professional implementation, benefits for biodiversity and habitat connectivity, knowledge transfer, and public impact. Although the application deadline expired in November 2021, the projects already realized at 28 different locations offer inspiring practical examples. Information boards, interactive elements, and accompanying habitat measures invite locals and visitors to discover native animal and plant species and to strengthen environmental awareness in the long term.
