Promotion of the near-natural development of water bodies and strengthening of the landscape water balance

The funding program of the State of Brandenburg supports public-law entities such as water maintenance associations and municipalities in the near-natural development of surface waters and the strengthening of the landscape water balance. The goal is to improve the ecological and chemical status in accordance with the European Water Framework Directive (EU WFD) and to enhance the regulatory capacity of the landscape water balance. Funded are investment measures for the creation of water development areas, the optimization of hydromorphological conditions, the restoration of connectivity, as well as water retention and management. Planning and expert services (HOAI service phases 1–4), technical and ecological construction supervision, and land acquisition up to a maximum of 10% of the eligible total costs are also subsidized. The funding amount covers up to 90% of eligible expenses, and even 100% in priority areas. Cost-intensive maintenance, institutional funding, and the acquisition of vehicles or equipment are not eligible for funding. An endorsement from the Regional Working Group is mandatory and must not be older than two years at the time of application.

Applications are submitted digitally and continuously via the Investment Bank of the State of Brandenburg (ILB), no later than December 31, 2027. Along with the digital application form, official approval certificates, a financing and cost plan, as well as the technical review by the Regional Working Group must be submitted. Approval is granted within the scope of discretionary authority, with ecological benefits, cost efficiency, and compatibility with the objectives of the EU WFD serving as evaluation criteria. The program bridges environmental, nature, and climate protection and makes an important contribution to the sustainable development of water landscapes in Brandenburg.
