Promotion of the Low German Language and Literature

The Carl Toepfer Foundation is committed nationwide to the preservation and further development of the Low German language and literature. This commitment includes maintaining a specialized library, awarding prestigious prizes such as the Fritz Reuter Prize, and organizing Low German book fairs and evenings. Additionally, projects are supported that explore contemporary forms of Low German in education, culture, and media, thereby strengthening regional identity. Non-profit associations, cultural organizers, and authors working in Low German are eligible for funding, as are individuals whose projects are non-commercial and have a clear connection to the preservation or promotion of Low German linguistic culture.

Continuous application submission without a fixed deadline allows for flexible project planning. Selection focuses on the relevance to the Low German language community as well as the cultural and social added value. Selected projects contribute to keeping the diversity of small languages alive by honoring multilingualism and making the historical depth of the region tangible in contemporary formats. In this way, the funding makes a sustainable contribution to the preservation of linguistic diversity and supports committed actors in the conception and realization of innovative initiatives within the Low German environment.
