Promotion of the Musical Heritage of Johann Sebastian Bach

The promotion of the musical heritage of Johann Sebastian Bach by the Foundation of the Canons of St. Thomas is aimed at non-profit organizations, public institutions, and educational establishments in Saxony engaged in church music and musical education. The goal of the ongoing grants is to keep Bach’s spiritual legacy alive. The focus of the funding includes the international Bach Festival Leipzig, the musical work of the Thomanerchor Leipzig, as well as projects at the educational campus forum thomanum. Building on a partnership established since 2001 between the St. Thomas Parish, the City of Leipzig, the Bach Archive Leipzig, the Thomanerchor Leipzig, and the Förderverein Thomaskirche-Bach e.V., the foundation annually supports a variety of concert series, cantata performances, and educational programs for emerging artists. Applications can be submitted at any time, ensuring flexible project planning.

The funding strengthens cultural diversity and promotes training and continuing education in the fields of music and media. Institutions benefit from tailored grant models that enable the targeted implementation of concert programs and educational initiatives. In particular, youth ensembles and educational institutions at the forum thomanum gain access to financial resources for rehearsal spaces, teaching offerings, and international collaborations. Through continuous support, statewide networks in the cultural and educational sectors are expanded, and existing traditions are further developed in contemporary formats. The Foundation of the Canons of St. Thomas thus makes a sustainable contribution to the preservation and promotion of Johann Sebastian Bach’s musical heritage in its spiritual dimension.
