Description
The Free State of Bavaria provides financial support within the framework of the “Promotion of Public Local Passenger Transport (RZÖPNV)” for measures aimed at modernizing and expanding public transport services. Funding is granted particularly for the construction and expansion of infrastructure projects such as tram lines, transfer facilities, depots, and charging infrastructure for alternative drives. The program also enables subsidies for the procurement of new bus and rail vehicles as well as annual public transport allocations for responsible authorities. The funding rate ranges from 50% up to a maximum of 90% of eligible costs, depending on the project. Applications for vehicle procurement and allocations must be submitted by December 1 of each year, whereas infrastructure projects can be applied for on an ongoing basis.
A prerequisite for approval is the implementation of the project in Bavaria, the urgency as stated in the local transport plan, coordination with urban development measures, and the demonstrated contribution to accessibility. Projects must not have commenced at the time of application. Required documents include, among others, the application according to template 1a, explanatory report, overview plan, cost estimate, and statement from the disability representatives. The multi-stage process begins with the early project notification to the responsible district government, followed by inclusion in the state program and formal application submission. The RZÖPNV funding provides municipalities, transport companies, and other project sponsors with a reliable basis to sustainably strengthen public local transport.
