Description

The Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space (BMFTR) supports the funding program "MARE:N – Coastal Research" as part of the Hightech Agenda Germany. It is aimed nationwide at educational institutions, research institutes, universities, and companies developing solutions to adapt to the rising sea levels in German coastal areas. The focus is on interdisciplinary projects in the fields of energy efficiency & renewable energies, infrastructure & urban development, as well as climate protection. The initiative promotes scientifically based research and technological innovations to analyze the impacts of climate change on coastal regions, design preventive strategies, and develop more resilient infrastructures. Contributions presenting practical concepts for enhancing coastal protection measures, optimizing water management systems, or strengthening ecological habitats are particularly welcome.

The two-stage application process begins with the submission of a project outline by no later than April 15, 2026, via the electronic form system "easy-Online." The submission deadline is not defined as a cut-off date; however, early submission is recommended to ensure consideration. In addition to the outline, a complete project proposal and, if applicable, supplementary documents are required for the application. Funding is provided in the form of non-repayable grants and is based on the criteria of innovation content, scientific added value, and applicability of the results. The project management agency Jülich (PtJ) accompanies the entire process—from consultation to disbursement. Participating experts benefit from competent management certified according to DIN EN ISO 9001:2015 and ISO 27001. This program offers an excellent opportunity to sustainably strengthen German coastal research and establish forward-looking measures against the consequences of sea level rise.
