Description

In Styria, the state promotes the installation of small wastewater treatment plants when connection to public sewer networks is not ecologically or economically viable. Private individuals and companies can apply for flat-rate amounts of up to €1,400 for systems serving up to 50 population equivalents (PE); for larger systems, funding amounts to up to 30% of eligible investment costs. Applications have been accepted continuously and without a deadline by the responsible building district authority since 01.01.2014. In addition to the pure plant investments, expenses for technical documentation and variant analyses are also funded to support measures in the areas of infrastructure, environmental and nature conservation, as well as energy efficiency and climate protection. This enables decentralized wastewater disposal for up to four residential units to be serviced.

For the application, a technical report, planning documents, official permits, a variant analysis, and proof of the impossibility of connection must be submitted. Selection is based on criteria such as economic efficiency, sustainability aspects, and water management priority. Funding for retroactive or ongoing operating costs is excluded. The goal is the practical and sustainable implementation of decentralized treatment systems that strengthen water protection and advance innovative solutions in urban water management. After thorough review and final inspection, the grant is paid out to ensure responsible long-term management of resources and wastewater in Styria.
