The funding of individual projects and annual activities of independent groups in the field of performing arts by the City of Vienna Culture is aimed at professional performing projects with a clear connection to Vienna. The focus is on inspiring developments in drama, performance, dance and movement theater, music and puppet theater, as well as transdisciplinary formats and offerings for children and youth. Both one-time individual grants and continuous annual funding are provided as subsidies to sustainably strengthen artistic innovation and cultural diversity. Implementation without financial support from the City of Vienna would therefore be impossible or only partially feasible, whereby public funding makes a significant contribution to the common good and cultural progress.

Eligible to apply are independent groups, legal entities, partnerships, as well as sole proprietors based in Vienna, and natural persons aged 18 and over with primary residence in Vienna. A direct connection to the Vienna city area and proof of public interest are prerequisites. Submissions are accepted on an ongoing basis without fixed deadlines, allowing creative projects to be submitted promptly. Experts from the Culture Department review submissions based on the criteria “Vienna connection,” “artistic quality,” and “feasibility” and award grants in accordance with the annual municipal council resolutions. In this way, the City of Vienna Culture supports the development and visibility of independent performing arts at the highest level.
