Description

Funding Program "Support for Coastal Protection Measures" is aimed at eligible applicants from Schleswig-Holstein, including public institutions, municipalities, special-purpose associations, water and soil associations, as well as other public law corporations and participant communities under the Land Consolidation Act. The state continuously grants subsidies of up to 90% of eligible expenses (in individual cases up to 95%) for structural flood protection works: new construction and reinforcement of dikes including dike defense and debris clearance paths, barriers, groynes, breakwaters, sand nourishment, bank protection structures, as well as conceptual preparatory work and surveys. The objective is to secure agricultural land, settlement areas, and infrastructure against storm surges, marine incursions, and rising sea levels while taking nature conservation concerns into account.

Funding Objective is the preservation of agricultural production potential by preventing flooding and land loss along coasts, islands, Halligen, and tidal waters, as well as adaptation to climate change. Only projects serving the public interest to improve coastal protection are funded. Required documents include the application for grant approval, a detailed project description with site plan, a cost and financing overview, all water and nature conservation permits, as well as evidence of earmarking and public interest relevance. Selection is based on criteria such as degree of innovation, contribution to risk reduction, cost-effectiveness, climate resilience, and ecological compatibility.
