Funding of independently operated theaters

The funding program of the State Chancellery and the Ministry of Culture of the State of Saxony-Anhalt supports professional theaters under independent sponsorship in their artistic, non-commercial work in the field of performing arts. Eligible for funding are both natural persons and legal entities under private law, including individual artists, companies, interest groups, and non-profit organizations. In the thematic areas of culture, media, and sports, three types of grants are available: Entry-level funding is aimed at first-time applicants who wish to establish themselves artistically in Saxony-Anhalt, while project-specific funding supports production projects, revivals, and guest performances. Long-term projects can be supported through basic funding, which honors outstanding artistic and cultural achievements with supraregional or national impact.

A prerequisite for application is artistic, non-commercial activity at professional theater venues; amateur theaters are excluded. For project-specific funding, at least one completed production in the state must be demonstrated. Basic funding requires at least three years of artistic presence in Saxony-Anhalt, proof of cultural significance and contemporary mediation offerings, as well as the realization of at least one new production per funding year. Funding amounts range from up to €3,000 (scholarship) or €5,000 (production grant) in entry-level funding, up to €30,000 for individual project funding, and up to €75,000 for two years of basic funding. Applications for entry-level and project-specific funding must be submitted annually by October 1 of the previous year, and for basic funding by May 15 of the previous year, to the State Administration Office of Saxony-Anhalt.
