Funding in the Field of Literature

The funding program of the State of Upper Austria in the field of literature is aimed at professional writers residing in Upper Austria as well as associations and organizers of literary projects. The goal is to strengthen contemporary belles-lettres literature (prose, poetry, drama, essay) and to promote creative work and cultural diversity within the state. The range extends from work scholarships and printing cost subsidies to grants for event and reading expenses, as well as special awards for dramatic works and large-scale projects such as the Adalbert Stifter Scholarship or Dramaturgy Prize. A particular focus lies on the promotion of readings and premieres: reading promotion initiatives in kindergartens and schools (“Upper Austrian Book Bonus”) and the realization of new theatrical works are specifically supported. The continuous submission option allows for flexible project planning without fixed deadlines.

Funded are fee-based creative phases, printing costs for publications, as well as event expenses. Funding prerequisites include compliance with the Upper Austrian Cultural Mission Statement, the Upper Austrian Cultural Funding Act, the General Funding Guidelines of the State, as well as a clear regional reference. Applications can be submitted online at any time; required are a completed and signed funding form, a detailed project description, a cost calculation with financing plan, and – for annual programs – the previous year’s financial statement. Funding is provided in the form of grants and offers diverse opportunities to bring literary projects to fruition within the state.
