Funding of exhibition projects for contemporary art to enable communication and exchange between artists and the public, and to promote art from Saxony-Anhalt in the public sphere. The goal is also the development of new, unconventional spatial concepts.

Description
frei-raum – Exhibition and Gallery Funding is a special program of the Art Foundation of the State of Saxony-Anhalt that supports regional initiatives for contemporary art. Funding is provided for individual and series presentations as well as annual programs of galleries headquartered in Saxony-Anhalt. The aim is to stimulate artistic encounters between artists and the public, to make Saxony-Anhalt positions publicly visible, and to test new, unconventional spatial concepts. Eligible to apply are artists, artist groups or initiatives, galleries, art associations, as well as curators with residence or main domicile in Saxony-Anhalt. For projects that have not yet started at the time of application and cover a funding period of up to twelve months, a grant of up to €15,000 per year can be requested. The funding covers up to 100% of the recognized expenses.
Supported costs include, among others, rent and operating costs, material costs for exhibition setup, fees for curators and supervisors, insurance and transport costs, public relations, as well as exhibition-related catalogs. Investments in technical equipment or permanent fixtures are not eligible for funding. The application must include a concept sketch, a detailed exhibition concept or program draft, work samples and CVs of all participating artists, a financing plan, an overview of planned opening hours, as well as brief descriptions of the planned exhibition projects. Submissions are possible until 08.06.2026, 11:59 p.m.; project start can be no earlier than 01.01.2027. Early measures require justification and the foundation’s approval.
