Joint Undertaking "Innovative Health Initiative" (IHI) is a public-private partnership between the European Union and the pharmaceutical industry, aiming to integrate medical research and healthcare across the entire value chain – from prevention through diagnosis to treatment. Through the awarding of grants, the program supports cooperative research projects that implement safe and effective innovations for patients as well as society. Special emphasis is placed on regions with limited access to modern health services, in order to establish sustainable care solutions there while simultaneously strengthening the competitiveness of the European health industry.
Eligible for funding are companies – especially small and medium-sized enterprises – universities, research institutions, and non-profit organizations such as patient organizations in EU member states or countries associated with "Horizon Europe." Applications are submitted based on periodically announced calls that promote consortium formation. Currently, IHI Call 11 is open with topics on brain functions, infectious and non-communicable diseases, pharmacovigilance, type 1 diabetes, and outpatient surgery centers; the deadline for short proposals is 09.10.2025.
