Vegetable Beds for Kids

The EDEKA Foundation supports daycare centers nationwide with its project "Vegetable Beds for Kids" to playfully introduce preschool children to the fascinating world of agriculture. The focus is on collaboratively creating raised beds on the daycare premises: participants sow seeds, plant seedlings, and, under guidance, take care of maintenance and watering. A pedagogically prepared learning concept conveys age-appropriate knowledge about nutritional basics, natural cycles, and health-conscious behavior. Participating institutions receive aprons, watering cans, and a variety of learning materials from the foundation to raise awareness among the young gardeners about balanced nutrition and environmental consciousness. A prerequisite for a successful application from April 1, 2027, is cooperation with a local EDEKA sponsor, who will be involved in the practical process.

The grant supports educational goals in the areas of health, environmental and nature conservation, as well as education for sustainable development. Through their active role in sowing and harvesting, children experience responsibility and teamwork firsthand. The initiative strengthens early childhood environmental awareness while simultaneously promoting motor skills and social competencies. Educational institutions from all regions of Germany wishing to integrate the project into their pedagogical program can apply at the specified time—ideal for all who want to firmly establish healthy nutrition, energy efficiency, and climate protection in everyday daycare life over the long term.
