Provision of Financial Assistance for the Remediation of Extraordinary Disaster Damage in Vienna
The City of Vienna supports natural and legal persons as well as companies and non-profit organizations with indefinite grants for the restoration of assets that have been extraordinarily damaged as a result of floods, landslides, mudslides, avalanches, earthquakes, snow pressure, hurricanes, rockfalls, or hail. From September 1, 2024, damages with a minimum amount of EUR 1,000 can be claimed. Eligible costs include repair and restoration expenses for buildings, equipment, machinery, and inventories, with insurance benefits to be offset. The funding rate is generally up to 30% of the recognized damage amount (maximum EUR 50,000), and up to 50% in cases of hardship (maximum EUR 100,000). Exclusion criteria include, among others, pending insolvency proceedings, insurance benefits already granted for the same damage, or minor damages below the threshold. Own contributions, construction defects, consequential damages, and insurable damages are not eligible for funding.
Application Procedure and Deadlines
A fully completed funding application together with a current registration confirmation or extract from the register, cost estimates or expert reports, photographic documentation, and proof of insurance benefits must be submitted to the Office of the Vienna State Government – Finance Department within six weeks of the occurrence of the damage. Submission is free of charge and can be made online or by email; in exceptional cases, by postal mail. After verification of completeness and plausibility, the state government decides on the funding approval. Documentation of the damages before the start of remediation work is a prerequisite for eligibility. Payment is made upon submission of the final invoice; advances are possible in cases of hardship. Inspections and compliance with anti-discrimination regulations ensure the proper use of funds.
